The GLAAD Wrap: Tony Award nominations, new trailers for 'Vida' and 'The Handmaid's Tale,' and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) British romance Tell It to the Bees opens today in limited theaters and on demand. The ‘50s set film tells a love story between Lydia (Holliday Grainger), an unhappily married woman with a young son, and Jean (out bi actress Anna Paquin), the town’s doctor and beekeeper. Tell It to the Bees is currently playing in theaters in New York and Los Angeles, and available on demand everywhere. Check out the trailer below.

2)Ask Dr. Ruth, a documentary following Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who was influential in the HIV and AIDS crisis, will be released in select theaters today. The film shows her life and legacy, and notes how she stood behind the LGBTQ community in a time when not many would. Ask Dr. Ruth is in theaters in New York and Los Angeles today, and will be released on Hulu on June 1. Watch a GLAAD-exclusive clip below.

3) Short documentary All in My Family comes out today on Netflix. The film tells the story of writer and director Hao Wu, who brings his partner and their young children to visit family in China, while several members of the family don’t know he is gay. In other documentary news, Verizon Media has acquired the rights to 5B, a new documentary that follows the opening of San Francisco General’s ward for those living with HIV and AIDS, and the nurses and doctors of the hospital. It will be released in June of this year.

4)The Experience, a queer coming-of-age drama, has just been acquired by Random Media. The film takes place at a wilderness program for wayward children, and follows two teenage girls who form a bond and fall in love at the program. In other film news, out actor Luke Evans has been cast in upcoming drama Dreamland, a look at the opioid epidemic.

5)A trailer has been released for the upcoming second season of GLAAD Media Award-winning comedy series Vida. The second season will see sisters Emma and Lyn re-opening their mother’s bar, and continuing to explore the stories of queer characters with Emma, Eddy, and more, including a new character played by out actress Roberta Colindrez. Vida season two will release all episodes on May 23 on the Starz app and Starz On Demand.

6) The Handmaid’s Tale has released a new trailer for season three of the GLAAD Media Award-nominated drama series. The trailer continues to give a bleak, but not completely hopeless, look at the dystopian future Gilead, and shows glimpses of lesbian characters Moira and Emily. Season three will premiere June 5 on Hulu. In other TV news, Lena Waithe’s The Chi has been renewed for a third season. The second season is currently airing at 10pm on Sundays on Showtime.

7) The first song from the Rocketman soundtrack, the titular “Rocket Man,” has been released with an accompanying music video. The video shows star Taron Egerton, who portrays iconic gay singer Elton John in film, both in the studio as well as in clips from the film. Rocketman will be released in theaters on May 31, and the song is available here.

8) Out singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan released her fifth album Today Was a Good Day, today. Her latest single off the album, “Lucky Stars,” is dedicated to her family, specifically her wife and their children. 9) Out lesbian singer Lor Choc released her video for her song “Vibe” on Tuesdsay, off her most recent album Love is Love. “Love is Love is basically based off my whole relationship with my girlfriend now. We go through ups and downs and everything, but we don’t let that come through the bond that we have.” Choc told them. when she released the video. 10) The 2019 Tony Award nominations were announced on Tuesday, honoring the best in Broadway. Some exciting LGBTQ and inclusive nominations were The Prom with seven nominations; Choir Boy with four nominations; two nominations each for The Boys in the Band and Torch Song; out actress Ali Stroker for her role in Oklahoma!; out actor Robin de Jesus for The Boys in the Band; and out actor Gideon Glick for To Kill a Mockingbird. 11) The Billboard Music Awards were held Wednesday night, honoring chart-topping performers. LGBTQ winners include Elton John; The Greatest Showman soundtrack, co-written by out composer Benj Pasek; and two wins for Panic! At the Disco, led by pansexual singer Brendon Urie. Imagine Dragons also took home an award, and lead singer and ally Dan Reynolds gave a speech calling for the end of so-called “conversion therapy.” Watch his moving speech below.

12) Media giant Condé Nast has announced a new slate of digital content that is in the works. One of the projects “Closet Confidential,” features Queer Eye’s Tan France exploring and enhancing people’s wardrobes. Read more about Condé Nast’s new programming here.  

13) Were You Gay In High School? is an upcoming short film from queer Asian-American filmmakers and writers Niki Ang and Karen Du that is seeking funding. The film takes a look at the awkwardness accompanying being a closeted queer teenager, through both live action and animation, and shows the story of the queer Asian-American experience, which often gets sidelined on screen.
